Is your communication style harming your relationship? You bet it is. Lack of communication and poor communication can lead to blame, anxiety, mistrust, depression, and resentment in relationships.   It  also increases the likelihood of a breakup, separation, or even divorce.

Radical  communication is the cornerstone of any successful relationship. I use the word ‘radical’ because it means original or fundamental-pertaining to the root or origin, a kind of communication that is essential.  When you bring in the chemistry definition of the word, it is even more important ‘…the part of a substance that is incapable of decomposition. Does your communication meet that standard?  Without it, misunderstandings can foment, emotions  run high, and relationships  suffer. Relationship expert John Gottman has highlighted the Four Horsemen which all manifest through  communication and demonstrable action:-criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. – These are the most toxic behaviors that  erode the foundation of a relationship. So, how can we steer clear of these destructive patterns and cultivate healthy communication habits?

#1: Learn Each Other’s Communication Styles

Understanding your partner’s communication style is crucial in fostering effective dialogue. We all have unique ways of expressing ourselves, and taking the time to comprehend and adapt to each other’s styles can bridge the gap in communication.

#2: Find Similarities

Seeking common ground can be a powerful tool in communication. By focusing on shared understanding, values, or goals, you can create a sense of unity and connection, fostering increased empathy.

#3: Be Open and Honest:

Transparency and honesty form the bedrock of trust in any relationship. Being open about your thoughts, feelings, and concerns  promotes authenticity and vulnerability, strengthening the bond between partners.

#4: Practice Active Listening

Communication is a two-way street, and active listening is a fundamental aspect of effective communication. By attentively listening to understand your partner without judgment or interruption, you demonstrate respect and empathy, paving the way for more meaningful conversations.  When you listen to peak-constant;y forming your response, you miss out on truly receiving what your partner is putting out.

#5: Set Clear Boundaries

Establishing boundaries is essential for maintaining healthy communication dynamics. Clearly defining what is and isn’t acceptable in your interactions can prevent misunderstandings, conflicts, and resentment, creating a safe space for open communication. You can address tone, volume, types of words and intent when you discuss the boundaries that you both need to thrive and feel respected in your communication.

#6: Create Goals and Compromise

Setting mutual goals and working together towards common objectives can foster collaboration and teamwork in a relationship. Learning to compromise and find middle ground allows for constructive problem-solving and strengthens the partnership.  Actively working to give your partner ‘wins’ by setting aside your personal preferences shows your willingness to accept influence and put them first.

Consistent, good communication is vital to a successful relationship. Understanding the impact of your communication is crucial for fostering a harmonious and fulfilling relationship. While mastering the art of radical communication may require effort and practice, the rewards of a deep, meaningful connection with your partner are immeasurable.
